Event Name: Mill Chimneys, A Talk by Graham Topping

Description: Many Northern towns sky lines were once dominated by these towering giants, every mill, colliery and industrial complex had a least one. Used as an economic indicator back in the day, at the bottom of every smoking chimney was an Industrial process. The site of hundreds of smoking chimneys offered reassurance to economists and workers alike that the economy was buoyant and jobs were secure.

Many have stood proud for well over a hundred years even though their use have long since ceased, a testimony to their design and construction. The skills and ingenuity of the masons employed in their construction are to be admired and give rise to questions like, how were they built and who built them, this presentation will are try to answer these questions. The terminology of the Steeplejacks employed in their construction and  maintenance will also be examined as will some out-standing examples of their types.
