Moving About
From prehistoric times, man has moved around the Rossendale area. Travelling on foot, horseback or carts and carriages on roads so bad that people were known to write their wills before venturing on a long journey! John Wesley, founder of the Methodist movement complained that the roads, on a journey from Padiham to Haslingden ‘were sufficient to lame any horses, and shake any carriages to pieces’.
Turnpike roads, railways, tramways but sadly not a canal, although one was projected, improved transport dramatically. Some artefacts remain and some are listed here. New entries are always welcome.
