ALL WELCOME

We all like to feel we’re part of something and many of us are developing new interests.  The South Pennines area is steeped in history from the prehistoric onwards leaving us a rich heritage to explore.

We do this with guided walks of only a mile or two, longer themed walks for the more adventurous, regular talks, visits to local places of interest and coach trips to places further away.

If archaeology is your thing, be it research using LIDAR or more traditional methods, attending digs or simply learning more about it, please talk to us.

You can be sure of a warm welcome and the chance to meet and make new friends. What are you waiting for?

RESOURCES

Whilst libraries, archives (both local and national) have a role to play, the volume of data freely available to all, is vastly more important than even a few months ago. Access to old maps, LIDAR images to identify potential areas of interest and old documents to support field work can make an engrossing pastime, yielding information that helps to build a much bigger and important picture.

Researching the history of a business, a house or a village whilst working alone can be engrossing but online collaboration can lead to new friendships with like-minded individuals.

We are fortunate in having access to magnetometry and other geophys facilities, professional drone surveys and a metal detector in addition to the less technical but essential basic equipment.

We have some excellent contacts with universities across the UK and further afield. This has proved particularly important when identifying our prehistoric sites. We also have an experienced and very knowledgeable industrial archaeology member on our team.

We carry third party public liability insurance for our members.
