A Grave Behind a Garden!
At the Dobbin Lane end of Patrick Crescent, Higher Cloughfold, Rossendale is a very overgrown path heading South for about 60 metres. If you walk down it, turn right behind the gardens, after 20 metres you will find the grave of John Ormerod who died in 1817. The route is difficult, covered with brambles and it is easy to fall so take great care.
To be buried outside of consecrated ground seems stange but the last lines of the inscription offer an explanation:
‘What e’re this place has been before
Tis consecrated now’

The gravestone is difficult to read but as it’s Grade II listed, more information and the full inscription can be found here.
It’s one of four, details of the other three can be found here.
