You’d be forgiven for thinking, ‘well that’s not very interesting’. After all it’s a small building which has obviously had some new doors, is built from local stone with a small flag roof. If you’d like to see it you can visit the Haworth Art Gallery in Accrington. It’s in the rear courtyard near the Artists Workshop.
The Haworth Art Gallery, is considered to be Lancashire’s finest Arts & Crafts house and garden, completed in 1909 for William Haworth. He was also one of the first people in the area to own a motor car in that year. Well, not just any car but a Rolls Royce!
However, this was before the days of filling stations in every town and also before petrol was stored underground. So what is it? It’s one of two surviving petrol stores in the UK!
