Look Down Young Man
As a Boy Scout (as they were called in those days), I was always taught to look up on the basis that few people do and consequently miss a great deal of what is going on around them. This was good advice but I’ve since learned that it’s also worth looking down. Who knows what you’ll find? A gold coin (it can happen)! An interesting brick (more on that in another post). Did you look at that grid or that manhole cover? Of course they may be modern but a substantial proportion are old and bear the name of the foundry which is likely to be local to the area. I’ve been amazed to find that there were so many, just in the Rossendale Valley. So cast a downwards look occasionally, particularly on old side streets and open up a whole new world!
