An interesting and enjoyable day with Tony Robinson and his wife Jean.  Amazingly we got right to the end before somebody (who shall remain nameless) referred to Tony as Baldrick!  Tony and Jean are enthusiastic canal boaters spending many weeks exploring the extensive network across the UK and had many stories to tell.

Eight of us met at Piccadilly Station but we then picked up another man on Canal Street before making our way across Manchester via the canal towpath.  A small excursion up the Manchester and Salford canal brought us to the pool besides the Bridgewater Hall with its floating islands (in the pool, not the hall).

An interesting conversation developed regarding the now ubiquitous Canada Geese.  In their native country (guess where that is), they have many predators and so lay a dozen or so eggs but over here, they have no predators and so thrive in great numbers.

We discussed eating them but apparently they’re tough and greasy.  One of our members said that a farmer friend of theirs recommended cooking a goose and a brick together.  After three hours throw the goose away and eat the brick!

Arriving at Castlefield and the incredible Grocers Warehouse we adjourned for lunch.  Most members had the good sense to bring sandwiches which they ate in the sunshine.  One couple ate a couple of sandwiches, a single portion of soggy fries and a bottle of water in a local bar.  £31.60.  Note to self; take sandwiches next time!

Resuming our journey we took in Roman Castlefield before visiting the National Trust garden in the sky.  This is a disused railway viaduct which has been planted in the last couple of years.  A bit of nature in the city centre.
