Well, who’d a thought it?
Robin Hood’s Well in Rossendale!
The walk over the moors from Helmshore to Holcombe is a favourite of mine and many others although we tend to have bottled water to quench our thirst nowadays. For pilgrims on their way to Whalley or Sawley abbeys this must have been a much needed source of refreshment and later used by packhorse men, drovers and of course their animals.
Today it is picturesque with ferns masking the interior but it’s well worth a visit.
For a more detailed and extremely well researched description with a suggested walking route, we recommend Lancashire Past.
