A Water Hydrant below Water!

This item from a bygone era has always intrigued me but I’ve never known quite what it was for.  A friend recently sent me an old picture of it with the caption; ‘Water Hydrant for Steam Trams near Lolly Mill.’  Now I knew there were electric trams in the area but steam trams?  Wow!

It’s located on the left, heading from Waterfoot towards Burnley on Burnley Road East, about 100 metres past Bridleway, just beyond some recently reclaimed land.

In the same batch of photos was this picture of the village of Water. Dean Lane is clearly shown on the left and the tram tracks are there for all to see.
