Well it finally happened.  After months of planning, identifying a contractor, obtaining grants and seeking landowners permissions we arrived at at a field above Bacup on a beautiful autumn day to survey what could prove to be an interesting prehistoric site.

This followed a two day dig just before lockdown which now seems a long time ago.  Seven SPAG members, five local residents and two employees of Magnitude Surveys were involved in what proved to be a great way to spend a sunny Friday.  The views were magnificent, the conversation fascinating but the initial results difficult to understand for the layman!

To quote one of our members:  ‘The funding has given us an amazing opportunity.  It was great to meet up with members of the archaeology group and the Survey Team on a beautiful day in in the picturesque South Pennines.  We all enjoyed the views, walking in the countryside and the lively company.  Local residents and passing walkers were all keen to learn about what we were doing. ‘

We’ve now received the report and sent it to several eminent archaeologists and organisations, all of whom are extremely interested. Our next move is to find a university or other body to take it to the next stage. We’ll keep posting information on our website.
