Clive gave us an insight into the working lives of the men, women and children who worked above and below ground in the mines of the Rossendale coal field.  The mines were owned mostly by mill owners who needed a steady supply of coal to power the steam engines in their mills.  It was imperative that the coal was sourced nearby as transport costs were very high hence the large number of small collieries in the Rossendale area.  Clive has produced several videos on YouTube under Rossendale Collieries, one of which, “The Rigging of England. Up Sharneyford, Bacup, at George Maxwell’s Change Colliery”, gives an overview of his talk.”
