Weavers Uprising Plaque (1)

What was originally the New Inn on Bury Road in Haslingden, is now the headquarters for Veterans in Communities (VIC), established in 2012.

In 1826 it was where handloom weavers who had smashed  power looms across Helmshore were charged with rioting, by the local magistrate.  The story didn’t end here, the next day a gathering in Chatterton was  read the Riot Act and after refusing to disperse, the local militia opened fire killing at least 6 people.

In 2026 commemorations are being planned by the Weavers Uprising Bicentennial Committee (WUBC) across Pennine Lancashire, 200 years after the event.
