Marple Locks & AVRO Aviation Museum Coach Trip

With a maximum of 20 allowed in the museum, places were limited but the lucky ones had a day out to remember.  Our first stop was at the Senior Citizens Hall in Marple where we were made extremely welcome with tea, coffee and other important requirements.

Three routes to explore this amazing flight of canal locks in beautiful sunshine allowed everyone to see as much as they wished or their energy levels permitted!  The locks climb 204 feet from the amazing viaduct over the River Goyt to the unusually impressive lime kilns on the Bugsworth Basin section of the canal.  Moves are afoot to make this a World Heritage site and it’s easy to see why.

Moving on to Woodford we enjoyed a buffet lunch before being spilt into groups of four for a facinating tour of the AVRO museum.  Most of the old aerodrome has been given over to modern housing on condition that a museum was established to record the incredible history of the place.  Amongst many other aeroplanes the WW2 Lancaster and Cold War Vulcan bombers were built here.

Each group was then allowed into the cockpit of a Vulcan, Lancaster and Nimrod maritime patrol aircraft as well as a guided tour of the museum and the opportunity to find a submarine using the Nimrod screen.

Tired but happy we boarded the coach for home.  If there is enough interest, we can consider running this event again but we can’t guarntee the weather will be as good!
