Toll Boards from Turnpike Roads Passing Through Rossendale

Recorded 2026

Toll boards were placed at every toll booth to display the prices for moving animals and/or vehicles along the next section of the toll road.  The Whitaker Museum and Art Gallery hold five boards in their stores and whilst not generally on view to the public, representatives from SPAG were kindly allowed access to photograph them.  Unfortunately, access and lighting were limited, which combined with the sometimes poor condition of the boards themselves, can make reading them quite difficult. To view the whole board, click on the image.

Four of these are from the Burnley and Edenfield Turnpike Trust which appear to be the only ones surviving from the 13 sold at auction on 12th April 1875 when the assets of the trust were disposed of.  Locations for the original positions of the boards are approximations to provide an indication of their position.  The original location of the Haslingden and Todmorden Turnpike Trust board at ‘Water’, is under investigation.

Our thanks to Gina Ferriday (Curator) and Dave Robinson (Volunteer) for their time and energy in making these boards available.

1 Rawtenstall Gate SD 8115 2279 The main tollbar in the town was situated between the old highway and the new road. mime.random.fills
2 Rawtenstall Chain SD 8111 2272 This chain was installed in 1864 between the Queens Hotel and the new Railway Station due to the change in traffic flow following the opening of the railway.  The heading is ‘BURNLEY BACUP EDENFIELD TODMORDEN’ and is therefore likely to have been shared by two trusts. notice.scan.truth
3 New Hall Hey Bridge SD 8095 2241 In the Minutes of 25th May 1849 a toll house with outhouses and garden was to be built on the south side of New Hall Hey bridge.  In the 1875 auction a wooden hut and fire stove were listed for sale! drape.driver.hints
4 Rawtenstall Weighing Machine SD 8118 2281 This was one of two weighing machines on Burnley and Edenfield turnpike, the other being at Crow Wood Tollhouse. pardon.dish.begins
5 Water Bar SD 8437 2586 Located on Dean Lane at Farmers Grove, this was presumably to stop access to the turnpike from Dean Lane. buying.steroids.charted
